UE: Presentation Skills

Page history last edited by David Woo 4 mos ago

Preface

I'm quite excited to have the opportunity to teach this course because, like you, I would like to improve my presentation skills.  Right now, in my life, amongst my friends - especially my Western ones - I feel as though I lack presence, and definitely do not know what the audience wants, which affects my topics for discussion.  There will be a multitude of opportunities to practice, to be sure; and I am with you!

This is a reminder:  we are not at the speech festival; no reading and no reciting!

Lesson Flow

  • (U-shape)
  • Demonstrate Plinky - http://www.plinky.com/
    • We'll also be utilizing a terrific public-speaking Website, Plinky - http://www.plinky.com/ -  which features a new speaking prompt, daily.  Every lesson, we shall answer its prompt as a warmup, incorporating technology in the process.
    • (Present) Model a two-minute Plinky response; no notes; and then in pairs, respond to prompt; two-minutes only
  • Distribute course information and the list; and then make photocopies for use in class; include service provider!
    • We're going to use mobile phone technology in our class, whose purpose is not only to capture evidence of your performance but to enhance the appeal of our lessons as well.  To achieve the latter, we'll need to compile a list of your mobile phone numbers as we are going to try a series of - hopefully - fun activities involving SMS.  If you don't want to participate, you do not need to share your number.  We respect your privacy!

  • What makes an Effective Presentation?

    • Brainstorm elements (e.g. visuals; audience management; signposting)

    • Rank elements on board and present them for two minutes

    • Ask questions afterwards; have presenter reflect on eye contact and voice delivery

  • Distribute Session 1 worksheets

    • Individual Practice 2

    • Two minutes to present your partner; no notes

    • Ask questions afterwards; have presenter reflect on eye contact and voice delivery

  • Distribute eportfolio information

    • An hour, tomorrow, perhaps, to tinker with equipment?

Plagiarism

Plagiarism is unacceptable as it involves claiming other people's work as your own.  Therefore we strongly advise you to use your own words wherever possible throughout your presentations.  Obviously your research means you get information from various sources - especially the Internet - but you must reorganize aand rephrase this - make it your own.
